Band of the Week: Mythica
In the name of Saint Patrick, the southern New Jersey shore is embracing all things Irish this weekend, including the music.
Mythica performs live Saturday, March 17, at Resorts Casino Hotel for their St. Patrick's Day Irish Festival, but don't expect anything traditional out of this group; they are all about the extraordinary, Celtic experience.
"We are not a traditional Irish band," says Melissa Cox, lead vocalist for the band. "We are 'Celtic Fusion,' which means we fuse or marry Celtic instruments and influences with other musical styles from around the world, including rock, alternative, Latin, bluegrass and more."
The World's A Stage: "Our live show is energetic and fun," Cox begins. "We get people clapping and dancing, and for St. Patrick's Day, we'll definitely pile on the Irish and Celtic tunes - maybe even play a few covers!"
Mythica's Roots: "I wanted to start a band because I loved the big sound of a band, as opposed to performing solo," Cox says. "I also wanted to experiment and collaborate with other musicians to create a sound that was very different, which is how we landed on our Celtic Fusion."
Fan Favorites: Some of the songs that fans enjoy most at Mythica shows include "Tolkien's Fever," "Mando Chicha," and "Just Kidding."
Roster: Melissa Cox, lead vocals, guitar, mandolin; Matt Smith, bass; Erin Flynn, violin, bodhran; Michele McCann, Hurdy Gurdy, whistles, clarinet, guitar, spoons, bodhran; Tim Kelly, drums.
What's A "Hurdy Gurdy?": "A Hurdy Gurdy is a very rare instrument that was invented around the year 1100 A.D. in France," Cox says. "You almost never see it in American bands, but we've got one!"
Go See Them: Mythica headlines Resorts Casino Hotel's St. Patrick's Day Irish Festival Saturday, March 17, inside the casino. Mythica is slated to perform three times, with doors opening at 11 a.m.; the band's first appearance is about 3:30 p.m. Admission is free with a Resorts Star Card; all other guests admitted for $5.
