Band of the Week: 2Twenty2
The party band 2twenty2 was playing The Social amphitheater in Revel on a recent Saturday night when singer Katie Lucille spotted two young women leaning on a railing by the stage.
She ran down the steps, mid-song, took their hands and led them out onto the dance floor, goofily dancing with them until it was her cue on vocals again.
It was a pretty clear example that when this group says they want to make people dance, they mean it.
"We love meeting new people, and we love just making people have a good time," said Erik Carl, guitarist, vocalist and keyboardist.
The band of 20-somethings from Berks County, Pa., officially formed in May 2011. The group gets its name from U.S. Route 222, which travels right by their homes near Reading.
"It's definitely fun playing during the winter in Atlantic City," Carl said, "but it's a totally different world during the summer."
Since then, they've quickly made Atlantic City and the Jersey Shore a home away from home, displaying their energetic style, modern setlist and dynamic performances from Long Beach Island to Sea Isle City.
Their first year together was a learning experience, Carl said, and they've grown together since signing to the Media Five Entertainment booking agency and beginning to play full-time.
"We went from playing shows two to four times a month, to playing four times a week," Carl said. "There's no way that can't make a group different, better and stronger."
One of the things Carl said they learned was how to go from a good band to a good show. Whereas they started playing strictly rock, now they play all types of modern dance music, and their sets are non-stop so the crowd keeps moving.
"We like to refer to it as melting faces," Carl said, with a chuckle.
At a 2twenty2 show, expect to hear mostly current hits mixed with some classics. Lately, they've been getting the best reactions from their renditions of "We Are Young" by Fun. and "We Found Love" by Rihanna and Calvin Harris.
This summer they plan to split their time mostly between the Jersey Shore and Dewey Beach, Del. Locally, you will see them most at the casinos, Long Beach Island, Sea Isle City and Avalon.
