Stone Harbor hosting Easter Egg hunt

Stone Harbor Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 is holding its annual Easter egg hunt at 1 p.m. March 23 at the Stone Harbor Firehouse, 175 96th St.

The egg hunt is for children in pre-K to fourth grade and is divided into groups: Prekindergarten, kindergarten, first and second grade, and third and fourth grade. Prizes from the Fudge Kitchen will given to winners in each group. Balloons, hot dogs and drinks will be available. The Easter Bunny will arrive on a firetruck with candy for all the kids.

Family program set

Cape Assist’s Family Dinner and Workshop Program is set to begin March 26 at the Cape Assist office, 3819 New Jersey Ave., Wildwood.

The seven-session program is designed to show parents and children ages 10 to 14 what they are doing right and help them with problem issues. Open to all families in Cape May County, the program runs on seven consecutive Tuesdays: March 26, April 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 and May 7. Each meeting begins at 5 p.m. with dinner for the participating families and ends at 7 p.m.

There is no cost to participate; child care for youngsters under 10 is available on premises. Each family that completes the seven sessions will receive a $100 gift card.

Gently used books needed

The Friends and Volunteers of the Ocean City Free Public Library seek donations of gently used books. The group will not accept magazines, textbooks or books damaged by water or storms.

Go Blue event for child abuse awareness

CASA for Children of Atlantic and Cape May Counties will recognize Child Abuse Awareness Month in April with Go Blue for CASA.

Go Blue was created to help raise awareness of children living in foster care and the importance of CASA volunteers. Locally, CASA is hosting a Go Blue for CASA event from 5 to 8 p.m. April 14 at the Atlantic City Country Club in Northfield. The event will feature musicians Ben Clayton, Yuni Sabatino, Geri Rizzo and John Oelkers, light fare and signature cocktails, as well as prizes and giveaways. Tickets are $75 per person or $125 per couple and are available now at AtlanticCapeCASA.org/Awareness.aspx or by calling 609-601-7800.

CASA also asks business and schools to participate in Go Blue for CASA Dress Down Day on April 12, the same day Gov. Chris Christie proclaims CASA Advocate Day. Businesses or schools can participate by donating $5 to dress down or wear blue in support of children living in foster care. Scholarships available

The Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchants’ Association is offering educational scholarships to students who live within the geographic boundaries of the association and meet certain eligibility requirements.

Since 1998, the association has awarded about $100,000 to students from the greater Tuckahoe area. Applications will be accepted from high school seniors for the James and Martha Owens, Alex and Virginia May scholarships. The Doris C. Stowell Scholarship program is in its fifth year.

One high school senior who meets special criteria established by Stowell will be selected as a recipient for the $5,000 Doris C. Stowell Scholarship. The number of scholarships for the James and Martha Owens Scholarship will be determined by the number of applicants, and the dollar amount will be set later, but will be at least $500. The Alex and Virginia May Scholarship is $1,000 and is for a high school senior who will attend a community college. The Owens and May scholarships for the high school seniors will be awarded after a student successfully completes the first college semester and provides the scholarship committee a copy of the transcript. The Stowell scholarship for a high school senior will be awarded after a student successfully completes the first year of college and provides the scholarship committee a copy of the transcript.

All applicants must be residents or dependents of residents, or dependents of business owners who operate within the GTAMA scholarship geographical boundaries, which are: to the north, the city limits of Corbin City; to the south, Cedar Swamp Creek; to the east, the intersection of Cedar Swamp Creek and Tuckahoe River if extended; to the west, the Dennis Township-Woodbine border.

Applications are available at local high schools, the Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchant’s Association website or Sun National Bank in Tuckahoe. Completed forms must be in the high school guidance office by May 1. College applications must be at the Tuckahoe Committee by June 1.

Educational seminar offered

The Cape May County Department of Aging and Disability Services will host an educational seminar with the New Jersey Senior Medicare Patrol in April. Charles Clarkson, project director for the Senior Medicare Patrol of New Jersey, will provide information on how seniors can protect themselves from Medicare fraud, waste and abuse.

The lectures will take place at 10:30 a.m. April 22, North Wildwood Senior Center, 10th and Central avenues, North Wildwood. Call 609-522-7611.

Senior courses offered

Atlantic Cape Community College’s Club 50 Plus will offer workshops this spring designed to enhance the personal, professional and social lives of older learners.

Manage, Edit and Email Your Photographs will prepare participants to move images from a digital camera to a computer, then edit and resize pictures for use on the Web or email. Students should bring to class a digital camera and a USB cable to connect to the computer. The class will take place from 9 a.m. to noon April 19.

Gardening workshop set

Pat Sutton will share more than 30 years of wildlife gardening expertise in a workshop for property owners. The March 23 topic will be landscape design with wildlife in mind, and it will take place at the Nature Center of Cape May, 1600 Delaware Ave., Cape May.

Baby-sitting course offered

Rutgers Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development program will offer a baby-sitting course designed for youth ages 13 and older at 6:30 p.m. April 2, 9, 16 and 30 and May 7, 14 and 21 at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Meeting Room, 355 Courthouse-South Dennis Road in Cape May Court House.

Space is limited. The course is free. The objectives of the program are to familiarize teens with the responsibilities of baby-sitting and equip them with the skills and information necessary to become capable, caring, responsible sitters.

4-H holds monthly orientations for adults ages 21 and older interested in volunteering. The next volunteer orientation will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 3 at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension office. 4-H volunteer opportunities are varied to suit interests. The time commitment is flexible.

VIM receives funds

Volunteers in Medicine, or VIM, will receive $3,500 from the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey to offset the cost of 50 patient visits. VIM is a free health care facility for residents of Cape May County who have no access to medical insurance and who meet financial eligibility criteria.

VIM’s focus is on primary health care, emphasizing disease prevention, health promotion and patient education in an easily accessible facility with the same dignity and confidentiality afforded in the private sector. Since opening day in 2002, VIM has been able to treat more than 4,000 patients with 24,000 cumulative visits, all at no charge. The funds received from the United Way will be targeted at patients suffering from diabetes and/or obesity.

Theater company announces auditions

The Greater Ocean City Theatre Company will hold auditions for the upcoming season March 23 at the Ocean City Music Pier, Moorlyn Terrace and the Boardwalk between Eighth and Ninth streets.

Casting will be for three Broadway-style productions, including “Singing In The Rain,” “Peter Pan” and “Smokey Joe’s Cafe.” OCTC also will cast adult actors for the 2013 Theatre for Young Audiences season. TYA shows will be performed at the Ocean City Music Pier on Mondays and in West Chester, Pa., on Saturdays, and will be part of Stockton’s Summer Series in Cape May on Wednesdays. Auditions are by appointment only. Performers should prepare two contrasting 16-32 bar selections and be ready to dance if asked. A musical theater movement and tap dance combination will be taught. Callbacks may be held after the dance calls. No children younger than 17 will be seen at this audition. Accompanist provided. Those interested in casting should have daytime availability and professional/college theater experience.

Child-support seminar set

The Atlantic/Cape May Vicinage and South Jersey Legal Services Inc. will hold a free seminar on child support at 2:30 p.m. March 21 at the Cape May County Administration Building, 4 Moore Road, Cape May Court House.

The seminar will address general questions about child support. Topics include court procedures and processes, how to request child support, how to modify a child support order, and what to do if child support payments are delinquent. The seminar includes a question-and-answer session and attendees will be provided with information packets. A Spanish interpreter will be available.

Volunteers sought for 4-H

Cape May County 4-H is looking for volunteers. Volunteer orientations are set for 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 3, 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 16 and 6:30 p.m. June 20 at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension office, 355 Court House-South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House.

4-H is looking for club leaders for gardening, photography, science, engineering and technology and herpetology programs. Corporate and Leadership volunteers are being sought for the Cape May County 4-H Foundation as well as volunteers for the annual 4-H fair. Interested volunteers complete an application, attend training and meet with 4-H staff prior to their appointment. Volunteers serving as 4-H club leaders are provided curriculum, resources and support for the clubs and programs they develop and implement.

4-H volunteer opportunities are varied to suit interests. The time commitment is flexible.

Doo Dah parade steps off April 13

The 28th annual Doo Dah Parade is set for noon April 13 at Sixth Street and Asbury Avenue in Ocean City. It goes through the center of town and ends at the Music Pier on the Boardwalk.

The parade features impersonators of legendary comedians, unusual humorous Brigades, six bands, floats, more than 500 basset hounds and costumed characters.

Entry is free. All who enter receive a free T-shirt and hot dog lunch from Dietz and Watson. Following the parade, there is a PieAsco in front of the Music Pier, where folks sit in grandstands and smoosh each other with shaving cream pies. Entry is free to all Doo Dah events.

JFS receives funds for homebound meals

Jewish Family Service of Atlantic and Cape May Counties (JFS) announces The National Foundation to End Senior Hunger (NFESH) has awarded the agency $1,000 to subsidize costs for essential kosher meals to homebound seniors. JFS is one of six agencies to receive financial support from the Jack and Eleanor Borden Kosher Meal Fund at NFESH.

Jewish Family Service has operated a Kosher Meals on Wheels program in Atlantic County for more than 20 years. Easy-to-prepare meals are delivered weekly to older adults living in the community.

This program is a collaborative between the Seashore Gardens Living Center, Beron Jewish Older Adult Services (JOAS) and JFS. The agency provides more than 2,500 kosher meals each year.

The frozen meals assure that older adults receive nourishment and variety as well as social interaction with delivery volunteers.

Museum uses new technology

Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum recently completed the installation of strategically placed QR codes throughout historic Hangar No. 1. Since its inception as an aviation museum in 1997, NAS Wildwood has integrated technology into the museum experience. The codes consist of black modules (square dots) on a grid with a white background that are easily scanned by smartphones.

After the codes are scanned, information will be uploaded to the guest’s phone detailing background history on the Hangar’s interactive displays, exhibits and aircraft. While the concept is not original, NASW is believed to be the only aviation museum in the United States utilizing this technology.

NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum boasts over 26 aircraft displays as well as exhibits of military memorabilia, engines, photographs, interactive exhibits that allow visitors to discover the science of flight and more.

Built by the U.S. Navy in 1943, it served as a dive-bomber training facility.

The museum is dedicated to the 42 airmen who died while training at NASW.

Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum is located in Historic Hangar No. 1 at the Cape May Airport in Lower Township. Cape May Airport was formerly Naval Air Station Wildwood, which served as a World War II dive-bomber training center.

County seeks submissions for creative recycling contest

The Cape May County Creative Recycling Contest Committee and the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority remind Cape May County residents of all ages that the deadline for the third annual countywide Creative Recycling Contest is almost here.

This year’s contest theme is “The Cape May Experience.” The contest is meant to promote recycling and reuse while highlighting the creative talents of county residents. Entries must be delivered to the Lockwood 4-H Youth Center Building, 355 Court House-South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House, on March 21, between 4 and 8 p.m.

Participants should submit entries with a completed contest entry form in one of four age categories: Ages 8 and younger; ages 9-12; ages 13-17; or adult.

All entries received will be judged by the Cape May County Creative Recycling Contest Committee on March 21. Entries will be on display April 8-12 at the Sea Isle City branch of the Cape May County Library.

An artist meet and greet reception will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. April 10 in the lobby.

The winners of each age category and a People’s Choice Award will be formally announced and prizes awarded at the 2013 Cape May County Earth Day Fair, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 20 at the Cape May County Park and Zoo.

N.J. hosts student competition for those of Indian origin

The North South Foundation, a volunteer-driven 501(c)e organization will hold an educational contest for students in first through 12th grades who are of Indian origin, on April 28 at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford. At least one parent or grandparent must be of Indian origin.

The proceeds collected through registration charges will be used for scholarships for disadvantaged college students in India. The Cherry Hill chapter of North South Foundation will help participants from the Atlantic City area with a math workshop, if enough students are interested. FEMA deadline extended

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has announced that due to registration for federal disaster assistance being extended until April 1, six disaster recovery centers previously announced as closing will remain open in New Jersey.

Federal Emergency Management Agency representatives are available at nine centers to provide clarification to letters, assist survivors with finding a temporary home if their primary residence was damaged or destroyed, check on the status of their application for assistance or refer survivors to other agencies that may provide additional help. Survivors also can consult with Small Business Administration customer service representatives and FEMA mitigation specialists.

Center hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, unless otherwise noted. They following locations are closest for Cape May County residents to visit: Ocean City Community Center, 1735 Simpson Ave.; Cape May County Chamber of Commerce, 13 Crest Haven Road, Cape May Court House, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; Hamilton Mall, 4403 Blackhorse Pike, Mays Landing; Union Avenue School/Margate City Hall, 9001 Winchester Ave., Margate City, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Easter fashion stroll set

Cape May’s annual Easter Fashion Stroll will take place at 1 p.m. March 31 at the Washington Street Mall. The Easter Bunny will be on hand for pictures and hugs, and will be giving out free jelly beans courtesy of the Original Fudge Kitchen. The Cape May Dairy Queen and the Original Fudge Kitchen will provide free ice cream for all children who are contestants.

Registration begins at noon near the Rotary Clock at the 300 block of the Washington Street Mall. Contestants start strolling at 1 p.m. Children’s categories include: Ages 3 and younger; 4-6; 7-9; 10-12; 13 and up; and best children’s Easter bonnet. Adult and family categories include best dressed lady; best dressed man; best dressed couple; best dressed family and best adult Easter bonnet. Awards will be given to the first, second and third place contestants in all categories.

Free vacations offered

The Ocean City Tourism Commission, Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce and Ocean City Board of Realtors have once again joined forces to promote “America’s Greatest Family Resort” by awarding eleven families a fun-filled, week-long family vacation in Ocean City.

Each of the eleven winners will receive a seven-night stay in a three or four bedroom condo that sleeps as many as eight people. Pictures, addresses and descriptions of each unit are available on the contest entry page.

Contest entry is through the Chamber’s website at OceanCityVacation.com. Entrants may enter one time for each of the eleven weeks per email address. Winners will be randomly selected and notified about three weeks before their vacation. Winners will be selected beginning June 3 and each week following until Aug.12.

Scholarships available

Applications are now being accepted for Magner Scholarships administered by Atlantic Cape Community College for the 2013-14 school year. The endowment scholarship was created by a bequest from the Magner family and is awarded to students from Atlantic or Cape May counties, with preference given to applicants interested in pursuing a health-related career.

Three $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing a degree at any accredited college. Students must have a 3.0 grade point average or higher or comparable work experience and demonstrated financial need. The deadline to apply is March 29.

OD Marathon health expo set

The Ocean Drive Run Club presents the 15th annual Ocean Drive Marathon and Health and Fitness Expo on March 23. The marathon takes place March 24. The Health and Fitness Expo will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. inside the Wildwoods Convention Center. The Expo will offer a day of wellness, with pro-active health related activities and screenings, as well as information on the benefits of diet and exercise. The Expo is free to attend and is open to the public.

Then the traditional Carb-Load Pasta Dinner will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. at Adam’s Restaurant inside the Montego Bay Resort, at 18th Street and Boardwalk in North Wildwood. Tickets for the pasta dinner are $20 per person and can be purchased at the Expo.

The Ocean Drive Marathon starts at 9 a.m. March 24 and will remain open until 2:30 p.m. The marathon course runs through the scenic island barriers of Cape May County and runners will be eligible for awards. The event is also set to include the following runs: the Ocean Drive 10-Miler; Ocean Drive 5K; and the noncompetitive Ocean Drive 1.5-Mile Fun Run.

Runners participating in the Ocean Drive Marathon or any of the additional Ocean Drive runs are asked to check in and pick up their race number, shirt and packet starting at 10 a.m. March 23 at the Health and Fitness Expo in the Wildwoods Convention Center. This is the final opportunity to register for the Marathon and 10-Miler events; registration will close at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Race-day registration will be available on March 24 for the Ocean Drive 5K and 1.5-Mile Fun Run only.

Logo contest scheduled

The Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders are sponsoring the 2013 Earth Day Logo Contest as part of the County’s Earth Day Celebration which will take place at the Cape May County Park on April 20. The theme for the logo contest, which is open to all Cape May County students, is “Respect for the Planet.”

The logo is to be hand drawn, black and white artwork incorporating the theme: “Respect for the Planet” submitted on 8½-x-11-inch paper. Each submission is to include the name, address, telephone number and name of school on the back. The deadline for submissions is March 28. Hospital awarded grant

Princeton Insurance of Princeton has awarded Cape Regional Medical Center a $10,000 grant to fund the implementation of the Hugs Infant Protection System in the Medical Center’s Maternity and Newborn Care Center. The system offers protection against infant abduction.

Artists wanted

The county is seeking artists to participate in an upcoming event. The Cape May County Culture and Heritage Commission will host its 12th Annual Exhibit and Contest of The National Arts Program, or NAP, at the Middle Township Performing Arts Center Gallery from April 16 to May 8.

This free art competition is open to all local, county, state and federal government employees and their immediate families. Members of the County’s non-profit Culture and Heritage Round Table groups and their immediate families are also eligible. Immediate family includes spouse/partner, mother, father, son, daughter, brother, sister or parent. This year the National Arts Program® welcomes employees and volunteers from Cape Regional Medical Center and employees from all Cape May County Schools.

The exhibit will consist of visual artwork in the following categories: painting; works on paper; photography; sculpture; mixed media; and craft. All entries submitted must be original works of the applicant completed within the last three years. There are separate classifications for adults (amateur, intermediate, and professional) and youth/teen (Youth 12 and younger, and Teen 13 to 18).

Honorable Mention ribbons and Certificates of Participation will also be presented. Additional prizes will be awarded at the discretion of the judges.

Cape assist awarded grant

The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey has awarded a $25,000 grant to Cape Assist to fund a Wellness Initiative for Senior Education Program. The goal of the Wellness Education Workshops, also known as WISE, is to extend good physical and mental health and to prevent or delay out-of-home placement for older adults.

The WISE Program is a six-week program that will provide older adults with the ability to understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions. The program will also give older adults the ability to engage in self-care and chronic disease management.

Health care resource day set

The public is invited to the county’s annual Healthcare Resource Day from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 23 at the Wildwoods Convention Center. On hand will be key county departments that play a role in meeting community health needs such as Crest Heaven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and the Office of Aging and Disability Services.

Additionally, there will be free screenings by the Parish Nurse Program of the Cape Regional Medical Center for blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and peripheral artery disease and fracture risk.

There will be more than 40 exhibitors representing various health services provided to county residents. Admission is free to all and there will be plenty of free parking. For additional information, call 609-463-6521.

Photographers wanted for show

The Ocean City Arts Center will host the annual Juried Photography Show throughout April. Work will be accepted through March 26 and must be hand-delivered to the Arts Center at 1735 Simpson Ave. in Ocean City. Traditional photography and Digital/Computer Generated photography will be eligible. All elements of digital work must be created by the photographer.

As many as to four photographs may be submitted with an entry fee of $18 for each piece. Photographs must be framed with glass or plexi-glass and be ready to hang with wire properly attached. Overall frame size should not exceed 24 x 28 inches.

Prizes are Best of Show at $200; Second Place at $150; Third Place at $100 and Two Honorable Mentions at $50 each. Youth arts program under way

The Center for Community Arts children’s art education programs have begun for the winter/spring term.

Paige Cunningham, a West Cape May resident, is teaching the theme “Animals in Art” for the Art at the Library Program. This yearlong art class for children ages 6 to 9 takes place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in four locations; Sea Isle City on Mondays, Wildwood Crest on Tuesdays, Lower Township on Wednesdays, and Cape May on Thursdays. The class reads a book, discusses the illustrations and creates art inspired by the story. Many mediums are explored; clay, pastels, paint, sculpture, charcoal.

The Youth Arts Program program is back from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturdays for children ages 10 to 14. Located in two locations; Cape May and Lower Township, this program is a great way to spend a night with peers creating art in a comfortable, fun atmosphere. It’s free and includes all art materials and dinner.

Rutgers rep to visit Atlantic Cape

A Rutgers at Atlantic Cape Community College representative will visit Atlantic Cape’s Cape May County Campus, 341 Court House-South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House, in the first floor lobby, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 28.

Members of the community are invited to learn about the B.A. and B.S. degree programs Rutgers offers at the Rutgers Lifelong Learning Center, located at Atlantic Cape’s Mays Landing Campus, including bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Hospitality Management, Labor and Employment Relations, Liberal Studies, Nursing (RN to BSN), Political Science, Psychology and Public Health.

There will be information available about graduate programs in Education, Business Administration (MBA), Master of Social Work (MSW), Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) and Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace.

For students who wish to continue their studies beyond the associate degree, Atlantic Cape offers dual admission programs with Rutgers and Fairleigh Dickinson universities. With on-site facilities, students can start at Atlantic Cape and finish at Rutgers or Fairleigh Dickinson universities without leaving campus. Atlantic Cape’s associate degree also is transferable upon acceptance at all public four-year colleges in New Jersey, and the college has more than 35 articulation/transfer agreements with four-year colleges and universities across the country.

Roller skating hours extended

Cape May Convention Hall will extend roller skating hours on Fridays and Sundays due to the overwhelming success of the roller skating program. Roller skating sessions will now run for five hours offering patrons more flexibility with when they want to arrive.

Doors for roller skating will open at 4 p.m. and close at 9 p.m. And Sundays, roller skating will begin at noon and conclude at 5 p.m. Saturdays will remain the same with two two hour sessions. The first session is from 1 to 3 p.m. and the second session is from 4 to 6 p.m. Skaters are encouraged to visit capemayrecreation.org for holiday hours and possible time changes.

Guests may bring their own standard or in-line skates or they can rent them from our facility. Admission and skate rentals are based on two hour allotments of time. Admission fee is $5 per person. Skate rental is $2 for traditional skates and $4 for in-line skates. Admission for nonskaters is $2.

Roller skating at Cape May Convention Hall will continue through Sunday, April 7 and then resume in December for the winter season.

Tickets on sale for concert series

Tickets for the Jersey Shore Pops Summer Concert Series are now on sale. Tickets will be available online and directly at the Middle Township Performing Arts Center Box Office, 212 Bayberry Road, Cape May Court House.

The concert series will include eight concerts with a focus on international guest stars from around the world. The series will open at the Middle Township Performing Arts Center the last weekend in June. The concert series is as follows: Irish Tenor, 7:30 p.m. June 29; Stars and Stripes Forever, 7:30 p.m. July 6; Legends in Concert, 7:30 p.m. July 13; The Italian Tenor, 7:30 p.m July 21; Swingin Sixties, 7:30 p.m. July 28; Classics Rock, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 4; The Glenn Miller Orchestra, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 10; Sinatra and Friends, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 17.

College offers professional training

Atlantic Cape Community College will offer a variety of professional development workshops this spring for individuals interested in enhancing their skill sets and advance their careers.

OSHA Electrical Review is a 10-hour certification course that concentrates on OSHA electrical compliance, April 8 and 9.

Personal Trainer Certification Phase II will teach personal trainers how to work with special populations suffering from diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity, as well as working with children, April 27.

Scholarship offered

The Nature Center of Cape May will offer the Randy Nuessle Memorial Scholarship Fund for a third year. This work-study program provides recipients with a $3,000 award each year throughout four years of college. Administered by Nature Center Director, Gretchen Whitman, the fund seeks to promote a deeper understanding and awareness of the natural sciences while encouraging responsible stewardship of our shared natural resources.

The fund was established by long term New Jersey Audubon members and volunteers, Barbara and Warren Nuessle in honor of their 16 year-old son, Randy, who died in 1984 of Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy.

Since this is a work study scholarship, selected students are obligated to serve as interns during the school year or summer for a total of 150 hours. In addition, the Nature Center staff serves as the intern supervisors and assist students and their schools in obtaining college credit under the school’s cooperative education programs.

Eligibility for the fund is limited to graduating seniors from designated high schools in Cape May County. A committee, composed of members representing lhe Nature Center of Cape May and the community of Cape May, ensures that selected students have demonstrated academic excellence while giving special consideration to those with financial need.

Bridges conference planned

The Partners for Connections in Education (P4CE) will present the Bridges Conference 2013: Connecting Higher Ed and K-12 May 8 to 10 at the Cape May Convention Center. The Bridges Conference will showcase unique partnerships and projects that are helping higher education and K-12 to work together on enhancing the continuum of available educational opportunities for students of all ages.

The conference will feature many innovate programs that look beyond the traditional institutional role on behalf of high student achievement and the development of creative and innovative students through economically feasible programs and projects between colleges and K-12 school. The conference will also feature Keynote Sessions from Hall Davidson from the Discovery Educator Network, Steve Zalot from Apple Computers and Melanie Andrich from Eduventures. Special Topic Sessions and small group “hands on” presentations will also be available throughout the conference. The Bridges Conference is co-sponsored by Wilkes University, PLS-Third Learning, Discovery Education and the Chester County Intermediate Unit.

Income tax return forms will be prepared free for people of any age with incomes less than $50,000. The forms will be completed through April 15 through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.

PAC, youth orchestra partners with Pops

The Middle Township Performing Arts Center has announced that the Atlantic Youth Orchestra will once again join forces with the Jersey Shore Pops for the coming 2013 season. This will be a continuation of a partnership started last year with the Pops orchestra hiring six of Atlantic Youth Orchestra’s outstanding members. The goal is to prepare these students for a possible professional music career as well as draw a younger audience to the orchestral concerts.

Police academy seeks candidates

The Cape May County Police Academy is accepting applications from aspiring police officers for the Alternate Route Training Program scheduled to start the Basic Course for Police Officers on Aug. 26. Applications are available through April 30.

This program, offers would-be-officers a better chance at employment as they become eligible for full police certification when they graduate. The program is the only residential based academy in the state of New Jersey for municipal officers requiring them to live on base while they train. The tuition cost is $3,300 which includes instruction, lodging, meals, ammunition, and textbooks.

Alternate Route Applicants must be 18 or older and have 60 college credits by September 2013 or two years of full time military service. To be eligible for selection, the candidates must pass written, physical, oral and psychological exams as well as a background check.

Applications are available from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Public Safety Training Center located at 171 Crest Haven Road, Cape May Court House. Applicants must pick up their own application and bring photo identification and a fee of $75 which may be paid in cash, check or money order, made out to County of Cape May.

The volunteers at CONTACT Cape-Atlantic offer free daily phone calls to say hello and check that all is well to help the disabled, elderly, and isolated citizens of Atlantic and Cape May counties who want to continue living independently. Volunteers also are needed to make the calls.
